Je Suis Charlie

Dear Mom & Dad,
I hope you are both well. It has been a very somber month in Paris with the attacks on Charlie Hebdo's headquarters and on a kosher market in the 20th arrondissement. I am writing to tell you that I am safe, but also to share my knowledge of the incident with you. I hear that Charlie Hebdo, which is a satirical parisian newspaper, was attacked because they depicted Muhammed in one of their articles which is extemely forbidden by Islam. I believe that we should continue to be allowed freedom of speech, but we really should be cautious of what we write or draw because even though we have this freedom we must still think about how our speech can affect others. I am afraid that these recent attacks will cause further discrimination against immigrants from Muslim countries and Muslims in Paris, even though it was a group of radical muslims who carried this out. My thoughts go out to the victims of these attacks and those who are affected by the backlash. Hopefully one day we can feel free to express ourselves without fear of repercussions.

Your loving son,
Cameron
